Rifka Annisa WCC Position Paper on Abortion

Translated by Isabelle

Counseling Approach
The Rifka Annisa WCC approach to survivors employs the principle of the self determination right as an alternative solution that is created through the process of counseling. As a logical consequence from this principle, a selection of clients, including women, become the main subject for the continuing or not continuing of unwanted pregnancy. Rifka Annisa WCC is responsible to give information about the accurate support and the effect which could arise from the different mentioned selections.

In connection with the client’s right on information, Rifka Annisa WCC might not have a monopoly on rightness. What Rifka Annisa can do is to express information about the view on abortion with regard to complete background. This is a part of the right to information as well as a part of the women’s right to reproduction. Furthermore, Rifka Annisa WCC will respect the client’s decision and play a decisive role, then give some approximate answers on fulfilling the mentioned selections.

Juridical position
Abortion is the act of taking the fetus out of the womb, when the fetus is not able yet to keep itself alive. That is why when the fetus is taken out in a condition in which it is able to keep itself alive, it is not called abortion but infanticide. Facing the latter (infanticide), Rifka Annisa WCC emphasizes its refusal because infanticide is against religion and humanity.

In matters of abortion, Rifka Annisa WCC believes that nobody, neither woman, decides for abortion lightheartedly. It is a fact that abortion is chosen if any other alternative is visibly worse for the time before the women’s life. The reason for this is the social factor creating a situation like that, sometimes taking form of forcing women to the decision of abortion. A negative view on extramarital children produces economic pressure and social sanctions which are suffered because of the extramarital pregnancy, for example the mentioned social factor.

In such a situation, if there is medical abortion care or not, women will always choose an abortion as their own way which often threatens their life. Regarding to this, Rifka Annisa WCC wishes to change the negative view on unwanted pregnancy and extramarital children cases. Within this frame Rifka Annisa WCC encourages the government into its responsibility limits. Therefore, the government takes the initiative through the bundling of its wisdom for advancing the change of this view.

While this view has not changed yet, Rifka Annisa WCC respects the women’s decision of not continuing their unwanted pregnancy, because it is also forcing the government to accept abortion as being a part of the civil rights. As a form of the responsibility of the country in terms of this right, the government immediately needs to form a safe abortion care for women who certainly have to be counseled before.
